Have you seen the new Ghostbusters movie yet? My oldest son loves the old movies and anything Ghostbuster related. So, we decided to finger paint some ghosts! This homemade finger paint was the perfect recipe for some fun, outdoor summer sensory play and art. And, easy to make and gentle on the skin. A win-win!
Homemade Finger Paint Recipe
What you need:
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 cup clear liquid hand soap (we used Dolphin Organics)
- food coloring (green for ghostbuster-themed)
To make:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the cornstarch, sugar and water. Whisk until thick (similar to a vaseline consistency).
- Remove from heat and let cool a bit. Add hand soap and mix.
- Add food coloring.
Then play!
We cut some simple ghost shapes out of paper and slimed them. We also drew some ghosts in our finger paint on the tray. Exploring finger paint is such a great way to combine sensory play and art, even the youngest of kids can play with finger paint. If you have kids that might put this in their mouths, you can omit the hand soap, it will just have a bit of a stickier texture but will be completely edible. You can also try adding some coloring to plain yogurt for another baby-friendly alternative!

However you choose to play with your homemade finger paint, I hope you have a blast doing it! And don’t forget, you are teaching your children in the process. Good job!
