For this week’s Weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids, we are reading The Snowy Day. This is one of our favorites to read each Winter as we live in a snowy part of the U.S.! There are so many fun ways to play and learn in the snow, and making snow paint is a hands-down favorite. (Psst…it’s the same recipe as our 3 ingredient sidewalk paint!)

Painting in the Snow with 3 Ingredient Snow Paint!
This snow paint is so much fun to paint with! The colors are nice and vibrant, and the addition of cornstarch to the paint thickens it up a bit, making it really visible on the bright white canvas.
What you need:
- sticks collected outside
- jars or cups
- cornstarch
- warm water
- food coloring
- paint brushes
- The Snowy Day (optional book to read)
What to do:
To make the snow paint, mix warm water and cornstarch in a jar so that the consistency is still runny and the water is a muted white color (I didn’t measure but you don’t need a lot of cornstarch for a cup or two of water – as long as you don’t end up with a thick paste you are good!)
To the cornstarch and water mixture, add food coloring, making as many different colors of paint as you like.
Take the snow paint outside, and make canvasses using sticks found on the ground! This isn’t a mandatory step, but a great way to build art vocabulary with words like canvas 🙂 And, the finished product looks really cute.
Kids can paint over and over again in new areas of the snow! My kids enjoyed making a picture, then moving the sticks to a new area to make a new blank canvas to paint in. They also experimented with painting in the fluffy snow, and then stomping the snow flat to make an icier surface to paint on. How fun!
*Disclaimer: We had an unseasonably warm 60 degree day with snow still on the ground when we did this, hence the bare arms 🙂 What a welcome break from near zero degree weather for us!
Enjoy painting in the snow with this simple 3 ingredient snow paint!
