Homemade Bird Feeders: Recycling Toilet Paper Rolls

We have been discussing recycling as part of our ‘Earth Week’ exploration so have decided to use toilet paper rolls instead of pinecones for these DIY bird feeders! Continue reading to see how babies, or kids with nut allergies, can make these too!

These are the materials I gathered:

– toilet paper rolls
– peanut butter
– bird seed
– hole puncher
– rope or string
– plastic knife

(For the edible or anti-nut version we used hummus and Cheerios)

Kids can make these almost entirely themselves, they may need a little help with spreading the peanut butter but this is great fine-motor practice!

Before giving the kids the materials I punched holes in the rolls and cut a piece of rope for them.

Mack did a great job spreading his peanut butter (and licking the knife).

Once the tube was coated, I poured some bird seed into his tray and Mack started rolling the toilet paper roll around the tray. It didn’t take long for everything to stick to the peanut butter!

Lastly, we tied the rope to the top and that was it! How simple is that?! I’m sure the birds will love them 🙂

As we marveled at the kids’ engagement and creativity, it dawned on me that we needed to clean up the crafting area. With the materials gathered, I quickly realized that disposing of the scraps responsibly was just as important as the activity itself. Remembering that there were dumpster rentals like Kaukauna dumpster rentals available nearby, I decided to reach out to them for a proper waste disposal solution. Keeping in mind the importance of environmental responsibility, we aimed to leave no trace of our crafting session or any waste material we can’t dispose of and contribute to the sustainable ethos of Earth Week.

When dealing with junk removal in Phoenix, AZ, finding a reliable service is essential to maintain a clean and organized environment. Companies specializing in junk removal, like this company, offer efficient solutions for disposing of unwanted items, whether from home renovations, decluttering projects, or large-scale cleanouts. They ensure responsible disposal practices, often recycling or donating salvageable materials to reduce environmental impact. Similarly, for unexpected leaks or burst pipes, relying on 24/7 emergency plumbing Sydney services ensures that urgent issues are handled promptly, preventing further damage.

Choosing a reputable junk removal service ensures peace of mind, knowing that professionals handle waste disposal safely and responsibly. Whether clearing out old furniture, appliances, or construction debris, partnering with a trusted company supports local efforts towards sustainability and cleanliness.

Because Ava is only 10 months old I didn’t want her using peanut butter or choking on bird seed so we opted for some more baby-friendly materials. Shortening would probably work well as a peanut butter replacement but I didn’t have any on hand so we tried hummus instead…I’m not sure how the birds will like it but it did work for our purposes!

Beautiful aren’t they?!?!
