Homemade Bird Feeders: Recycling Toilet Paper Rolls

We have been discussing recycling as part of our ‘Earth Week’ exploration so have decided to use toilet paper rolls instead of pinecones for these DIY bird feeders! Continue reading to see how babies, or kids with nut allergies, can make these too!

These are the materials I gathered:

– toilet paper rolls

– peanut butter

– bird seed

– hole puncher

– rope or string

– plastic knife

(For the edible or anti-nut version we used hummus and Cheerios)

Kids can make these almost entirely themselves, they may need a little help with spreading the peanut butter but this is great fine-motor practice!

Before giving the kids the materials I punched holes in the rolls and cut a piece of rope for them.

Mack did a great job spreading his peanut butter (and licking the knife).

Once the tube was coated, I poured some bird seed into his tray and Mack started rolling the toilet paper roll around the tray. It didn’t take long for everything to stick to the peanut butter!

Lastly, we tied the rope to the top and that was it! How simple is that?! I’m sure the birds will love them 🙂

Because Ava is only 10 months old I didn’t want her using peanut butter or choking on bird seed so we opted for some more baby-friendly materials. Shortening would probably work well as a peanut butter replacement but I didn’t have any on hand so we tried hummus instead…I’m not sure how the birds will like it but it did work for our purposes!
