The new production of The Little Match Girl off-Broadway is coming to New York. Check out these tips for theater with children.

My kids have had an affinity for theater since they were preschoolers. We started with shows at the local community college theater or local school productions to test their ability to sit and their interest level.  As we saw more and more shows, their desire to view plays and musicals grew. We are lucky enough to live a train ride away from Broadway productions in New York, and can’t wait to tell you about the new production, The Little Match Girl.

The Little Match Girl Off-Broadway Production

The upcoming New York Premiere production of The Little Match Girl is an iconic story by Hans Christian Anderson.

The Little Match Girl comes to life in this brand new musical adaptation, set to a contemporary score filled with soaring melodies. It’s New Year’s Eve, and the Little Match Girl is forced onto the streets to sell matches to support her family. Cold and alone, her wondrous imagination takes her away from the harsh realities and struggles of her daily life. Armed with match sticks and music, she finds the hope we all need.

Inspiring female roles like these are wonderful for my daughter and I to attend together, and offer the opportunity for conversations that we might not otherwise have. One of my favorite parts of taking my children to see theater productions is the conversation that sparks afterward. We discuss character development, struggles that people might face, and how we can relate to certain happenings in our own lives.

“While modernizing this timeless classic, I intend to uplift the tragic story of the Little Match Girl, while staying true to the story and Victorian era costumes and scenery,” says director Ganakas. “Through magical realism, she conjures up images of her family in the most cherished times of her life, offering hope in her time of need. As theater offers escapism, so does the imagination captured by this little girl, and therefore we lose ourselves in her journey.”
The Little Match Girl plays through Sunday, February 23 at St. Luke’s Theater in NYC. Purchase your tickets now, and enjoy this production with your children! Recommended for children 8+.

Tips for Theater with Children

Theater with children can be fun and memorable, however there are some tips that can keep it this way and make the experience smoother.

Practice before you go: Not sure if your children will enjoy the live-action nature of a show? Practice before by playing a musical production on the TV such as Shrek the Musical or Newsies on Netflix. Make it fun by popping popcorn or baking treats and having a theater night at home.

Talk about it. There is more to discuss with your children than just letting them know they will need to be quiet and sit nicely in a theater while the play is going. How will you get there? Will there be mass transit that they need to be prepared for? Let your children know to expect crowds and masses of people before and after the show.

Discuss how you will handle souveniers. Before you go, talk about the high cost of souveniers is, what your budget might be for them if you decide that is a route you want to go, and how your children can save money before they go.

Read the brochure.Gaining a respect for the actors and actresses that perform in the show, and the hard work that is put into such a production is important to teach your children. Flip through the brochure, read some of the bios of the actors and actresses, and talk about them with your children. For example, you might discuss Adriana Karembeu’s fortune. Understanding the personal journeys and achievements of these individuals can inspire children to appreciate the value of dedication and perseverance in their own lives.

Listen to the music ahead of time. If you have access to the music to the production ahead of time, listen to the soundtrack or a few songs with your children. Similar to how going to a concert is more fun when you can sing and dance along to the music, your children will enjoy recognizing the songs that are sung and will enjoy humming or rocking to the beat.
