There are so many fun ways to play with conversation hearts before eating them. From science, to arts and crafts to writing, here are 10 ways.

Conversation hearts, those small, colorful candies with messages printed on them, are often associated with Valentine’s Day. My kids almost always end up with some, but don’t like to eat them. So, we have compiled a list of fun ways to play with conversation hearts (and learn) with them before tossing them in the trash.

10 Fun Ways to Play with Conversation Hearts

Finding February activities for toddlers and preschoolers can be fun, so why not add some conversation heart play to the mix! Here are some creative and fun activities you can do with conversation hearts:

  1. Math Fun:
    • Use conversation hearts for simple math activities. You can practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by using the candies as counters. You can use ‘make 10’ sheets to help younger kids see the math

  2. Word Sentences:
    • Have fun creating sentences or short stories using the messages on the conversation hearts. Each person can take turns adding a new sentence or incorporating the messages into a collaborative story. Think of this like ‘Mad Libs‘ filling in the blanks with conversation hearts!
  3. Sorting and Graphing:
    • Sort the conversation hearts by color or message, then create a bar graph or pie chart to represent the data.
    • Discuss the concepts of more, less, and equal while comparing the quantities of different colored hearts.

  4. STEM Building Challenge:
    • Challenge participants to build structures using conversation hearts and toothpicks. See who can create the tallest tower or the most stable structure. Grind the conversation hearts into a powder and add water to make conversation heart glue or paint for their structures!

  5. Arts and Crafts Activities:
    • Create Valentine’s Day cards or decorations using conversation hearts. Glue them onto paper or cardstock to make colorful designs.
    • Make a mosaic by arranging conversation hearts into a pattern or picture on a flat surface.
    • Make these cute Conversation Heart Painted Rocks
  6. Candy Experiments:
    • Conduct science experiments with conversation hearts. For example, observe how they dissolve in different liquids (water, vinegar, soda) and discuss the results.
    • Can adding water to them make paint like this DIY Watercolors Made from Skittles Candy?
    • Add them to Sprite or carbonated water to make them dance.
  7. Writing Prompts:
    • Use the messages on the hearts as writing prompts. Write short poems, stories, or love notes inspired by the words on the candies.
  8. Cooking and Baking:
    • Incorporate conversation hearts into your baking. Decorate cupcakes, cookies, or a cake with the candies.
    • Make a sweet trail mix by combining conversation hearts with other snack items like pretzels, nuts, and dried fruit.
  9. Make Patterns:
    • Create patterns using the different colors of conversation hearts. Discuss and extend the patterns, introducing concepts like repetition and symmetry.
    • How many different patterns can you make with a certain number of candies?
  10. Scavenger Hunt:
    • Hide conversation hearts around the house or classroom and organize a scavenger hunt. You can also create clues or riddles related to the messages on the hearts.

These activities are not only fun but also provide opportunities for learning in various subjects! So if you need something new to do with the conversation hearts that come home, try a few of these activities.
