Kids love trains. Engaging the senses while learning and providing hands-on experiences allow kids the opportunity to make connections with the materials in front of them. After reading the Polar Express this week for the Weekly Virtual Book Club for Kids, we are doing a really fun color learning activity by painting with trains!

Painting with Trains to Learn Colors

Painting with trains is a really great way to create a hands-on experience while learning colors! This fun method combines art with learning for toddlers.

What you need:

  • toy trains
  • washable paint
  • crayon/marker/colored pencil
  • white paper

What to do:

On white paper, draw colored circles and label the paper with the name of the color. Adding the words help early readers ‘read’ the words independently by giving the cue of the color it is written in.

Match colored trains to the paint on a tray (we like to use the lids of plastic bins as trays).

Drive the train through the paint color.

Fill in the circle with the corresponding paint color by driving the train around the circle.

My kids had so much fun with this matching the color of the train to the paint, and then to the correct paper. Even my 5 year old who knows his colors well enjoyed this activity!

My 19 month old enjoyed repeating the names of the colors and matched a couple of them independently.

As these questions to engage your child while painting with trains:

What color are you using?

Can you match the train to the paint color?

What does a train sound like?

Can your train make noise while it paints?

Let’s count as the train drives 10 times.
