Drawing Clouds in Shaving Cream with 'Little Cloud'

Drawing in shaving cream is such a fun and classic preschool activity. What a great way to combine sensory play with learning. It is great for developing fine motor and pre-handwriting skills in kids. This week, with the Weekly Virtual Book Club, we read Little Cloud by Eric Carle {affiliate link}. My kids just adored this book, and really enjoyed drawing clouds in shaving cream along with the book.

Drawing Clouds in Shaving Cream

This is a great sensory play activity for kids, and the perfect extension activity to the book, ‘Little Cloud’ by Eric Carle. While it looks like a messy activity, the shaving cream can be easily wiped off of a table surface, and even gives the table a bit of a cleaning.

What you Need:

-white foamy shaving cream (like Barbasol)

–The Little Cloud by Eric Carle (affiliate)

What to Do:

Read the book with your kids, discussing the pictures and the shapes that make up the illustrations.

Spread some shaving cream out on a flat surface such as a table or a tray.

Look at the illustrations in the book, and ask your children if they can try to draw the same shapes as the clouds in the book.

This is a great opportunity to work on fine motor skills and pre-handwriting. Copying the pictures in the book requires attention to detail and can help with early drawing skills.

My 1, 3 and 5 year olds all enjoyed this activity and had very different interpretations of the illustrations and abilities in copying the pictures, which I love seeing!
