This melted snowman is such a fun winter craft for kids. I love the deconstructed, simple nature of it, and that kids’ can really open it up for their own interpretation.
This post will show you how you can turn this melted snowman into a winter craft for kids that can be kept or displayed, or you can use it as a busy bag with kids to create and play with over and over.
Melted Snowman Winter Craft and Busy Bag
This is a very cute craft that kids of many ages can complete and enjoy. Opt to turn it into a busy bag by omitting the glue and assembling for fun over and over.
What you need for this melted snowman craft:
- Black & White Felt
- Orange Pipe Cleaner
- Red Ribbon
- mini Googly Eyes
- White Poms
- Buttons
- Skinny Tree Branches
- Black Acrylic Paint
- Paintbrush
- Hot Glue or Elmer’s Glue (if making a craft)
- zippered pouch or ziplock bag (if making a busy bag)
To make the melted snowman craft:
Create the head of the melted snowman by gluing googly eyes and a pipe cleaner carrot nose to a large white pom-pom, and painting or drawing a mouth.
Cut wiggly circular shapes out of white felt to create the puddle of melting snowman as a base. Mine were about 3-4 inches.
Glue the snowman head to the melted snowman puddle. Cut small top hats out of black felt.
Glue the head and hat towards the top on the white melting snow felt.
Cut about 3-4 inches of red ribbon, fold in half and glue at the top. Then, cut small “arms” off the tree branches. Glue each of those to the melting snow.
Lastly, glue on 3 buttons to each one.
You now have a cute little Melting Snowman! For young children, provide them with the materials to make a melted snowman and use the items to discuss vocabulary such as smile, eyes, buttons, etc. Then, allow them the create freedom to glue or place the items wherever they like on the melted snowman.
Older kids might enjoy thinking about what snowman would look like melting, and predicting where those items might fall when melted.
These are sure to be unique and different, and that makes the process and result even more fun! Glue a loop of ribbon on the back to turn the melted snowman into an ornament as well.
To make the melted snowman busy bag:
Cut the shapes for the melted snowman, the hat, etc out of felt as described and shown above. You can choose to create the snowman head above to add to the bag, or simply let children place the eyes and nose to the melted puddle.
Add buttons, some small sticks, googly eyes, small felt circles for the mouth, etc to the busy bag.
Children can assemble the melted snowman however they like! They might enjoy placing the eyes in funny places or stick arms in different areas.
My own kids talked about what it would be like if the wind was blowing while they assembled their busy bags! This is a quick and easy way to keep them busy with a fun and seasonal winter busy bag for kids.
