These ‘The Mitten’ color by number printables include the animals, and the mitten, from the children’s book, The Mitten. Get them free here.

The book ‘The Mitten’ is one of our favorite feel-good books to read in the Winter. It is such a warm book that kids seem to resonate with.

It’s on our top  January Books for Toddlers list and this activity is a fun extension to the book. Toddlers and preschoolers love reading books over and over again, doing activities that coincide with them can really help them dig a little deeper into the text of the book furthering reading comprehension.  These ‘The Mitten’ Color by number printables are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers!

In the book, woodland animals find the mitten and crawl in; first a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse, and what happens next makes a wonderfully funny climax.

These color by number printables depict the animals, and the mitten, shown in the book.

If you don’t yet have the book, get it on Amazon here, or find it in your local library.

Color by Number Printables

Typically, when doing kids activities, I love open-ended play and freedom for creative thinking. However, I find that doing activities like color by number can also have their benefits. Not that the kids have to follow the art exactly as dictated, but there are benefits to adding color by number to your planning. Here are a few reasons:

  1. Cognitive Skills Development: Color by number requires children to use their cognitive skills to match numbers with colors. This process enhances their ability to recognize and differentiate between numbers and colors, promoting cognitive development.
  2. Number Recognition: The activity helps reinforce number recognition skills. By associating numbers with specific colors, children learn to identify and distinguish between different numerical symbols.
  3. Fine Motor Skills Improvement: Coloring within the designated spaces and coordinating between numbers and colors helps improve fine motor skills. This activity requires precision and control, aiding in the development of hand-eye coordination.
  4. Learning Math Concepts: Through the color by number process, children can gain an early understanding of basic math concepts, such as counting and sequencing. It provides a hands-on and visually engaging way to introduce mathematical principles. Check out the Space Coloring Pages: Color by Addition to add some math to these!
  5. Creativity and Self-Expression: While the numbers and colors are predetermined, children still have some room for creativity within the set parameters. Choosing colors and completing the picture allows for a sense of self-expression and creativity. You can encourage shading or sketching to the finished product!
  6. Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a color by number picture provides a tangible outcome, fostering a sense of accomplishment and boosting self-esteem. This positive reinforcement can motivate children to engage in more learning activities.
  7. Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Coloring, in general, is known for its calming effects. Color by number activities can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, providing a break from more demanding tasks and helping reduce stress. I actually enjoy coloring these alongside my kids!
  8. Educational Fun: Color by number activities make learning enjoyable for children. The structured yet entertaining nature of these activities can make learning numbers and colors a fun and positive experience. When the color by number sheets are used as an extension to a book it furthers the reading comprehension.
