Oobleck is one of those fun science experiment/sensory play ideas that most likely many of us have tried before. The perfect combination of cornstarch and water makes for a solid that looks like a liquid…or a liquid that can be a solid? It’s fascinating to say the least. My 6 year old just started to be able to make it independently, he has his recipe memorized, so to play with it a bit differently, we took our oobleck outside for some fun drip painting on the sidewalk!

Oobleck is so much fun to play with! Try this drip painting on the sidewalk technique to play with it outside, combining sensory and science!

Drip Painting on the Sidewalk with Oobleck!

Homemade sidewalk paint is essentially watered down oobleck. The substance is amazing to play with, but can also be played with on the sidewalk, and is washes right off! You can opt for a hose or wait for the next rain to clean up the mess (though the kids kind of like spraying it off with the hose and watching it run off like magic).

To Make the Oobleck

Our (my 6 year old’s) favorite recipe is:

2 cups warm water

4 cups cornstarch

food coloring of your choice

That’s it!

Make your batch of oobleck, mix it up with a wooden spoon, and take it outside!

Grab some gobs of the substance and let it drip through your fingers, onto the sidewalk. Your kids will begin to notice the ‘science’ to it, and can make some fun drip painted designs!

My kiddos opted to try a Jackson Pollack-esque approach with paintbrushes, which was messy and fun too!

We had way too much fun with this! Can you think of any new ways to play? I’d love to see them!

Make a few batches, create some different colors, and have fun drip painting! (Perfect for a quick and easy summer boredom buster too – that they can take OUTSIDE!)
