I’ve had a box of candy canes sitting around waiting for me to come up with some crafty thing to do with them…I got sick of them staring at me, taunting my lack of inspiration, so we smashed them up and made ‘candy cane glitter’. Funny how sometimes the simplest of things can end up being the most fun!
We unwrapped and put 4 candy canes in a ziploc bag (in my head I counted this as fine motor practice) and then went to smashing (gross motor)! I recommend doing this over a cookie sheet, it minimizes any mess that comes out of the bag and makes a nice surface for smashing. As you can imagine, the kids thought this was pretty awesome.
Once we had our candy cane glitter, we drew some pretty rough looking candy canes and added glue. But, you could draw (or print) whatever you want to decorate with your ‘glitter’.
The kids sprinkled the candy canes all over the glue just like you would with glitter. Mack got a little heavy-handed with the glue in an attempt for complete independence…but it still worked and made it even more special to him!
Once dry, we dumped the excess candy cane and ended up with some pretty adorable art!
