This camping sensory bin uses a base of dry white rice and camping story stones for fun sensory play for kids. Great before a family camping trip.
Camping activities for kids are some of our favorite themed activities to do. We love being outdoors, and there are so many fun things to do with fire science, nature inspired arts and crafts, and family games around the campfire. This camping sensory bin uses a base of dried rice as a fun sensory material for kids to scoop and play with, and camping story stones to create imaginative scenes.
Camping Sensory Bin with Dried Rice
Sensory bins are always in rotation at our house. They are great for helping kids regulate emotions, especially my children who have difficulties with managing anger.
They are also great for kids who crave sensory input, providing tons of tactile fun and play. This camping sensory bin uses dried rice, a material wonderful for touching, letting slide through fingers, scooping and pouring.

How to make the camping sensory bin:
This one is super easy! Make a set of camping story stones by drawing some camping items on flat, round stones with paint pens. *See the full tutorial of how we make the camping story stones here.
It’s the perfect addition to our entire collection of printable camping games.
In a bin, pour some dry, white rice and mini scoops, spoons or other fine motor tools. We love this set to use with rice as they really work little fingers. Building these fine motor skills is essential to pre-handwriting and learning to hold a pen or pencil.
Place the story stones on top of the bin of rice, and invite children to play! My kids used their imagination to move the rocks around the rice and make up stories about our camping trip.
Another fun way to play with this camping sensory bin is to bury the rocks. Kids can use their tools or their hands to uncover and ‘dig’ for the story stones. Upon finding one, they can use it as a prompt to tell a part of a story.
There are many fun ways to play with this camping sensory bin! How will you play?
