Homemade Flour Paint

As some of you know I have struggled with trying to include Ava (9 months) in a lot of the projects that I do with Mack (3 years old). She likes to participate in everything we do and I love watching her explore her little world…however that usually means allowing her to put whatever it is that she is exploring in her mouth! I have experimented with some homemade paint, we usually use pudding paint, however today I thought we would give flour paint a try! I liked the way this came out and it was a little thicker than the pudding paint and had kind of a pasty consistency so I’m hoping it doesn’t peel off of our projects the way that pudding paint does over time. Pudding paint does however have the upper hand when it comes to taste!

This recipe is SUPER simple, all you need is:

1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup water
food coloring

How easy is that?? If you have an older child this is great because they can do the measuring, mixing etc. themselves….which we all know children love to do. Mack loves anything that he can do “all by myself”.

We also added a little splash of vegetable oil so that the paint had a bit of a shine to it. You can omit the oil if you don’t have it on hand and the paint will still come out just fine. I don’t cook with vegetable oil but always keep a large container of it on hand for projects!

Mix the flour and the water together and give it a good stir! We used a spoon but I think a whisk might work better to really get rid of those clumps. At this point you want to distribute the paint into individual containers before coloring. I chose to use an empty egg carton because it makes a nice palette and was good for the project we were going to use the paint for. You can also you old baby food containers or those plastic dressing containers that you get with take-out food if you want something lidded to keep the paint in.

Mack loves color mixing so I let him choose whichever six colors he wanted to come up with! He did a great job and I love how bright they are. We went on to use them for marble painting but you could easily use them with a paintbrush and paper with toddlers or with a plop of it on a high chair tray to let a baby explore with! Babies will love the texture and watching it squish between their fingers.

As you can see, Ava didn’t think it was the best tasting thing she had ever had, which I kind of liked. It forced her to actually paint and create with it rather than sit there and suck on a paintbrush!
