Today activity inspiration was letter A! I decided to use this opportunity to introduce Mack to some different artists and some famous artwork. His attention span was kind of short for this so we looked at a couple of books from the library and googled some famous works of art like the Mona Lisa, Monet’s Waterlillies and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. This list from No Time for Flash Cards has some great art books for kids!
I happened to have some sunflowers in my kitchen so thought it was the perfect opportunity for his first still-life painting!
I laid everything out for he and Ava and they got right to work! We used watercolors because I didn’t feel like cleaning paint up from all over the place today…I have those days….I find watercolors to be much cleaner with my kids.
I had to prompt Mack to really look at the flower and ask him what colors different parts of the flower were. These questions got him really studying the flower and he began to replicate it with ease!
He worked from the outside in, layering the colors because the watercolor is so faint.
Ava has just learned to paint and loves being involved in her brother’s projects. So although she did not paint a sunflower she certainly came up with a beautiful work of art!
I just adore the way Mack’s sunflower turned out!!
