These play ideas for 4 year olds will encourage academic growth and development in preschoolers, all while having fun, bonding and playing!

Preschool is such a fun stage and a time of academic and socio-emotional growth and development. There are many activities for 4 year olds to facilitate this and bond together.  Here are ten fun play ideas for 4 year olds to do.

Play Ideas for 4 Year Olds

Four year olds are learning how to play together and build relationships with peers and family. One of the best ways to help facilitate a preschoolers growth, is to simply play with them!

We have written lists on Fun Games for 4 Year Olds and Activities for 4 Year Olds to do at Home, and this list will focus simply on fun ways to play.

Get down on the floor together, sit at the table, or head outside to engage in these playful activities. The word ‘play’ simply means to engage in an activity for the purpose of recreation, so being playful together doesn’t need to be active or strenuous

10 Fun Ways to Play

Collage: Cut and paste pieces of old books or magazines to make a collage of likes together.

Building: Construction is an activity that this age group really enjoys. Some of our favorite items to build with are wooden blocks or Magnatiles (seriously we buys new sets of Magnatiles to expand our collection at every occasion).

Story Stones: Making a set of story stones helps with pre-reading and story comprehension, but is a great way to play! Make a set to go with your child’s favorite book, and use them to act out or re-tell the story. Check out our 3 Little Pigs Story Stones for inspiration.

Play pretend with real-life scenarios : Set up some play areas in your house or build a set out of cardboard boxes. Play grocery shopping, doctor, veterinarian, restaurant or more!

Dance: Freeze dance, slow dance, dance party…however you like to dance, get down and boogie together!

Yoga: Doing yoga is great for emotional regulation and exercise, but can also  be a fun way to play together too. Check out the Yoga Spinner game or check out Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube.

Scavenger Hunts: Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or outside. A color hunt or letter hunt can be fun indoors, or a nature hunt outside.

Board Games: Play games! This is one of the most fun ways to play together for me. Check out this list of Fun Games for 4 Year Olds  for board games to play together.

Acting: Act out a favorite book or put on a puppet show.

Cook together: Go through some recipes on Pinterest or look through a cookbook and head to the kitchen. Or, grab a bag of cookie mix and bake 🙂

There are so many fun play ideas for 4 year olds that you can do with your kids! Pick one off of this list and get playing.
