Indoor Activities for 4 Year Olds
Young children are easily stimulated and are more likely to enjoy an activity when a caregiver does it with them. This is great bonding time! As 4 year olds are building fine and gross motor skills, which are integral to development, these are great skills to build indoors.
Yep, gross motor skills like jumping, walking, going up stairs, crossing the midline, dancing, and more can be practiced indoors! We have a handful of ideas below, and then even more on our printable list of activities to do with 4 year olds at home.
Some ideas of activities to do to:
Physical activity works wonders. Put on some music with Alexa, GoNoodle or YouTube and get moving. Teach children the chicken dance or the hokey-pokey!
Another activity that toddlers and preschoolers love is dress-up. This allows the children to use their imaginations to pretend to be someone they are not. Some popular choices are princesses or pirates. Go on a dress-up parade with each change of an outfit.
Not ready for gross-motor yet? Get out the puzzles. The large puzzles that you can all get down on the floor and do together are always a hit! This can practice the fine motor skills of putting puzzle pieces together, as well as crossing the midline when doing a large floor puzzle.
Play a board game. Hi Ho! Cherry-O and Chutes N Ladders are not only fun games but games that teach children basic skills like numbers and colors and develop fine motor skills. Check out our list of Free Printable Board Games for Kids.
Children love to build and create new things. They can do this with Legos, wooden blocks and Lincoln Logs. See which child can build the tallest tower or set up a lego challenge with one of our free printables. If your 4 year old find small legos hard to build with, try the larger Duplo legos instead.
Play with playdough! Don’t have any on hand? Make some 🙂 If you want to go beyond your traditional playdough tools, grab one of our free playdough mats.
Do some yoga. Cosmic Kids Yoga on YouTube is a must watch with this crowd!
