Making ornaments with kids is a great way to celebrate the holiday season. They can be great boredom busters or keepsake crafts that kids always enjoy displaying. This stick Christmas tree ornament uses sticks that you can find outside on a nature walk together. Do this as a fun Christmas activity with toddlers, or let older children create them on their own!
Stick Christmas Tree Ornament Craft
We have made so many ornament crafts, from paper crafts to cinnamon stick ornaments to stained glass nativity ornaments, and I have to say they are among my favorite on the tree.
This year, our tree is about 90% decorated with homemade ornaments the kids have made over the years, and one of their favorite parts of decorating is opening the homemade ornament box and reminiscing. It truly feels like the holidays for us after that.
This stick Christmas tree ornament is very similar to our cinnamon stick Christmas tree ornament and our scrap fabric Christmas tree ornament that we have made too!
What you need to make the stick Christmas tree ornament:
Dry twigs
Golden acrylic paint (this is not washable so be extra careful with little ones)
Paint brush
Glitter paper
Sequins
Pencil
Scissors
Craft glue
How to make the stick Christmas tree ornament:
Collect some dry twigs and clean them nicely. Apply 1 or 2 coats of golden acrylic paint on the collected dry twigs. Allow the paint to dry completely. *Skip this step for a more natural look or if crafting with toddlers, opt for washable paint even if it might not last.
Cut out a star pattern from the glitter paper or any other kind of scrapbook paper. Decide the size for the twig Christmas tree and cut the twigs accordingly. Use 2 sticks to make the trunk of the tree. Cut the rest of the sticks to form a triangle pattern. Each stick should be a bit shorter than the previous one. Arrange the longer sticks on the bottom side.
Attach the 2 sticks prepared for the trunk, side by side. Leave some space from the bottom side of the trunk sticks and then start attaching the other sticks on them. Start by attaching the longest stick and then moving towards the top by attaching the next shorter ones.
Attach the star cutout on the top intact part of the trunk sticks. Select some colorful sequins to decorate the twig tree decor.
Apply glue drops on the spots (along the twigs) where you’d like to add the sequins. Young children can use a q tip dipped in glue to dab spots on the twigs where they would like to place their decorations.
Simply place the sequins on the glue drops; makes it easier to attach the sequins on the twigs. Allow the glue to dry entirely.
You can also use other decor items such as crystal beads or glitter foam shape cutouts to decorate the tree.
Have so much fun with this ornament craft for kids, children of all ages will love to make these.
