These 2 year old activities will keep your children busy and engaged, and will give you bonding experiences. You don’t need supplies, do them every day!
Two year olds are always on the go and busy. This can make it tough to know what to do all day long. They are getting better about not putting everything in their mouths, can still be easily overstimulated, are still learning how to follow rules while testing boundaries.
We have written extensive lists on ideas for Activities for 2 Year Olds, and have holiday specific lists such as 15+ Fall Activities for 1 Year Olds and 2 Year Olds, 30+ Christmas Activities for 1 and 2 Year Olds and more. These are great, but often require setup and materials.
This printable list below will serve as a reminder to you of 2 year old activities that you can do every single day that will help you bond and stay busy.
2 Year Old Activities to do Every Day
Important milestones for 2 year olds include:
Movement activities such as kicking, throwing, running and catching.
Hand and motor development like holding a pencil or scribbling with a crayon, dumping and pouring or stacking blocks.
Language skills including pointing, naming people and objects, and saying 2-4 word sentences.
Emotionally they are working on copying others, becoming more independent, and expressing their feelings.
All of this is more than enough work for a 2 year old! Luckily, you can keep them busy and bond with them by carrying out some of the activities on this list, all while encouraging those milestones they are working so hard on.
15 Two Year Old Activities You Can Do EVERY Day!
As a stay-at-home mom, there were many days where I was left wondering, “what am I going to do with him/her all day?”.
I’m sharing some of my go-to activities and boredom busters that can be done every single day (kids love repetition), and, that don’t require anything that you most likely wouldn’t have at home. We had a similar list of activities to do with a 1 year old every day and it was a helpful resource!
Grab the free printable of these activities at the bottom of this post and hang them in every room in your house for quick reference 😉
2 Year Old Activities
Read a book. Or the same book over and over. We have many book lists for this age including 12 Bee Books for Preschoolers, 15 Spring Kids Books, Fall Picture Books for Kids, and 10 Simple Color Mixing Books to Read
Have an indoor scavenger hunt. Make a list of items around the house that you know your 2 year old can identify, and see if you can find them together. Look for a chair, a sink, the blocks, etc.
Play dress-up. This age group has the beginnings of pretend play, and just might love to put on a chef apron or a fire chief hat.
Go plane watching. Lay down in the grass or go for a walk and look for airplanes in the sky.
Go for a walk. (grab the umbrellas in the rain and splash in puddles – bonus points if you jump too ;)).
Have a dance party. Crank up the tunes and show you little one your best moves, you will have a happy audience. You little one might be able to teach you a new dance move or two.
Play catch. Remember those milestones above? Playing catch works on motor skills that 2 year olds are developing. Find a big, soft ball and play indoors or outside.
Play with Playdough. Keep this on hand as it will become a go-to activity. Make your own playdough or buy the classic Playdoh brand.
Stack pantry items. Cereal boxes and soup cans are great for building towers. Plus, you just might be able to get dinner cooked this way!
Play I Spy. Describe an object that you can see in the room and see if your two year old can guess what it is. You can also try a printable I Spy game.
Build a tower and knock it down. Knocking down a tower might be more fun for toddlers than the actual building of them. Give them a safe space to practice this skill.
Play with puppets. You are sure to hear some giggles with this one. Don’t have puppets in your toy box? Use a sock on your hand and a funny voice.
Play hide and seek. Hide in an obvious spot and let your 2 year old find you, they will get a kick out of it!
Play in water. My parenting mantra is “when all else fails, add water”. Take a bath, fill up the sink to splash in, or play in the hose.
Play with stickers. I like to stock up on seasonal stickers from the dollar store and put them out with bills or other mail that is going to be trashed for toddlers to put stickers on.
Most of these, with the exception of an outdoor walk, can be done INDOORS. Even airplane watching can be done from the living room window. For those long Winter days, this will come in handy!
