Christmas is quickly approaching which means time off from school and spent at home with the family…this can leave a lot of moms with that overwhelming of feeling of “how do I keep them busy and entertained??”, especially once Christmas is over, and you have those few days before the New Year’s Eve hype. I have a super simple and FUN boredom buster for your kids, and best of all, just about ANY age can use this! Homemade puff paint combines art with science; by combining just a few pantry items, creating artwork, and then popping it in the microwave, your kids will be beyond mesmerized. We just did this yesterday and my littles (2 & 4) were easily entertained for over an hour!!! I ended up making a few batches of this paint.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of flour (I used gluten free because that is all we have in our house)
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1-11/2 cups of water
- food coloring
Instructions:
- Combine all dry ingredients.
- Add 1 cup of water and whisk until smooth.
- Continue to add small amounts of water until the consistency is similar to pancake batter.
- Separate into plastic baggies (like Happiness is Homemade does) or squirt bottles which is what we prefer.
- Add food coloring to your paint bottles and mix well!
Once your paint is made, you can be creative with how you want to use it! We used it a number of ways, some microwaved and some not. To make it puff, you will need to microwave your painting for 30 seconds (a little longer if it doesn’t seem fully ‘cooked’).
We decided to use some of our paint to make ‘cupcake christmas ornaments 🙂 Sidenote: These can NOT be microwaved!
We also squirt some of our paint into a plastic ornament, and swirled it around the inside of the globe for a nice tie-dyed effect. (These can’t be microwaved either – I thought maybe just for a few seconds but they started to melt!)
We also used out puff paint to decorate some of our previously painted handprint pictures from our Christmas handprint printables! So much crafty fun!
