This DIY Christmas ornament resembles the popular ugly sweater for Christmas. Made out of felt and with a basic stitch, this is perfect fine motor practice.
DIY Christmas ornaments are so much fun to make! Kids love keeping them for years to come and reminiscing about when they made them. Felt ornaments are always fun and easy to make, and perfect for young children.
Ugly Sweater DIY Christmas Ornament
This ugly sweater Christmas ornament uses felt and some fine motor skills to create. Young children can help with cutting and some basic sewing, and older children should be able to create these on their own.
What you need for the ugly sweater ornament:
My little Christmas white tinsel (hobby lobby) or pipe cleaner
White embroidery thread
Large needle
Hot glue/hot glue gun
Scissors
To Make the DIY Christmas ornament:
Lay out a piece of felt and draw a basic shirt on top with a black colored pencil.
Cut out the sweater with scissors.
Thread a needle with a long piece of thread and begin doing basic blanket stitch or whipstitch from right side of sweater to right before the neck of the sweater, cut and tie off. (Tip: make the sweaters larger for little hands to sew, and smaller as a challenge for bigger kids!)
Repeat step on the left side of the sweater.
Carefully use the hot glue gun to glue on the tinsel and buttons.
Turn the sweater over, cut a 5” piece of embroidery floss, tie the ends into a knot and glue to the back of the sweater.

Some other ideas for this ornament include: gifting to a teachers with their initial on it, adding bells or pom poms with hot glue, making them all of various colors of felt.
